A frightening incident took place in Kent, Indiana, when a bus transporting the Indiana University Indianapolis men’s basketball team caught fire while returning from a road game on Saturday. The team was on its way back from a match against Northern Kentucky when a mechanical failure led to the bus igniting. Fortunately, all team members and staff were able to evacuate the bus safely, as reported by IU Indy Athletics on social media. The post also noted that another bus was en route to pick them up for the return trip to Indianapolis.
Images shared by IU Indy Athletics depicted the bus severely burned and charred from the flames that engulfed it on the highway. One photo showed thick black smoke billowing from the bus, which caused noticeable traffic delays on the road.
In the game prior to the incident, the Jaguars lost to the Norse with a score of 71-67 in Highland, Kentucky. This season, IU Indy has a record of 9-20 overall, including 5-13 in conference play, and has struggled recently, losing four of their last five games.
With only two regular-season games remaining, both will be held at home in Indianapolis. The team is set to face Robert Morris this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Their final home game, which will also serve as Senior Day, is scheduled against Wright State on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
The Horizon League Tournament, in which the Jaguars compete, is set to begin on March 4.
