In a significant development, a man suspected of espionage for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been apprehended by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The individual, identified as Shehzad, a resident of Rampur district, was arrested in Moradabad on Saturday. This arrest is part of a broader nationwide operation targeting individuals allegedly involved in spying for Pakistani intelligence agencies, which has already resulted in multiple arrests, including social media influencers and YouTubers.

According to a press release from the ATS, Shehzad had been under close surveillance due to credible intelligence indicating his involvement in smuggling activities across the India-Pakistan border, allegedly with the backing of the ISI. Investigations revealed that he had made several trips to Pakistan and was involved in the illegal cross-border trade of various goods, including cosmetics, clothing, and spices. Authorities believe that this smuggling operation served as a cover for his espionage activities.

Shehzad is accused of maintaining close connections with ISI operatives and providing them with sensitive information pertaining to India’s national security. Officials have stated that he was not only relaying intelligence but also facilitating ISI operations within India. Further investigations uncovered that, following ISI directives, Shehzad had transferred funds to Pakistani agents operating in India. He is also alleged to have assisted in sending individuals from Rampur and other regions of Uttar Pradesh to Pakistan under the guise of smuggling, with the intention of recruiting them for ISI-related activities.

Reports indicate that the visa and travel documents for these individuals were arranged with the assistance of ISI operatives. Additionally, Shehzad is said to have procured and delivered Indian SIM cards to ISI agents, potentially aiding their communication for subversive purposes.

A case has been registered against Shehzad under Sections 148 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the ATS police station in Lucknow. He has been presented before a magistrate, and further legal proceedings are currently underway.
