A sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is in the works.

Cult classic film “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is reportedly moving forward with a long-awaited sequel. The follow-up to the 1997 comedy is set to feature Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino reprising their roles as the underachieving friends. In the original film, Sorvino and Kudrow portrayed Romy and Michele, who concoct fake careers to impress their former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion.

Mira Sorvino, known for her Oscar-winning role in the 1995 film “Mighty Aphrodite,” appeared to confirm the sequel’s development after The Hollywood Reporter initially reported that discussions were underway. She shared an image of the article on Instagram, expressing her excitement with the caption, “We’re pretty excited about it.” Fans responded enthusiastically, quoting memorable lines from the original film in the comments.

While specific plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, Tim Federle, the creator of Disney’s “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” is set to direct. Both Kudrow and Sorvino are also expected to take on executive producer roles.

Over the years, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” has maintained its popularity, inspiring a musical adaptation in 2017 and a television prequel that aired on ABC in 2005. Kudrow and Sorvino even embraced their characters during a stage appearance at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Filming for the sequel is anticipated to commence in June of this year.
