In a troubling development for the Kanpur metro project, Turkish construction firm Gulermak has reportedly fled the city, leaving behind unpaid dues amounting to Rs 80 crore. The company, which has been working on the underground section of the metro, has not compensated 53 contractors for nearly ten months. The delay in payments has been attributed to protests regarding Turkey’s involvement in the India-Pakistan conflict.

According to the contractors, all senior officials of Gulermak have left Kanpur. Attempts to contact them have resulted in vague responses, with the company avoiding direct answers about the outstanding payments. Despite complaints lodged with the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), no action has been taken to address the situation. In response, nine contractors visited the District Magistrate’s office to file a formal complaint.

The contractors claim that the payment delays coincided with nationwide protests against Turkey’s role in the Indo-Pak war. The project was executed through a joint venture between Indian company Sam India and Gulermak, which subcontracted work to 53 firms. While some payments were made, a significant amount remains outstanding.

On Monday, representatives from nine contracting firms submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, detailing their claims for payments that include Rs 3.70 crore owed to Metro Marble, Rs 1.20 crore to Radiant Services, and Rs 1.70 crore to Shreyans Infratech, among others.

Gajendra Singh, a contractor from Radiant Services, stated that only 50% of the payments have been received thus far. Panchanan Mishra, Joint General Manager (Public Relations) at UPMRC, confirmed that Gulermak had completed work on four stations of Corridor One in Kanpur and that full payment had been made to the company. However, he noted that the contractors are sublet firms and that the metro has retained 5% of the total contract value, which is typically released after a year. If Gulermak fails to pay its contractors, UPMRC may have to release this retained payment.

Efforts to reach Gulermak for comments have been unsuccessful, as many calls went unanswered.
