A violent confrontation erupted at the Civil Hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi, located in Punjab’s Kapurthala district, on Thursday, resulting in four individuals sustaining injuries and igniting public outrage over increasing hooliganism in communal spaces. The emergency ward became the epicenter of this brutal clash, with unidentified assailants wielding sharp weapons.

The incident unfolded when a group of young men, who had previously attacked an individual at a nearby shop, followed him to the hospital where he was receiving treatment. Once inside the hospital, the attackers launched another assault, leading to a chaotic brawl that left blood splattered across the emergency ward, alarming both patients and medical staff.

Varun Khatri, one of the injured parties, recounted that he had received a threatening phone call months prior, which he dismissed. On the day of the incident, he was at a shop with friends when the group attacked one of them. As they rushed the injured friend to the hospital, the same assailants pursued them and struck again. Khatri reported that during the attack, he was robbed of his chain and ₹50,000 in cash.

Conversely, Arshdeep Singh, a member of the opposing group, claimed they had arrived at the hospital first for treatment and were subsequently attacked by Khatri’s group.

Dr. Navneet Singh, who was on duty at the time, confirmed that four individuals were injured in the altercation. Two of the injured were referred to other hospitals due to the severity of their conditions, while the remaining two continued to receive care at the Civil Hospital.

Law enforcement arrived shortly after being alerted to the situation. ASI Harjinder Singh stated that an investigation is currently underway, and legal action will be pursued based on the testimonies of those involved.

Farmer leader Paramjit Japowal, who witnessed the incident, condemned the violence, labeling it shameful and calling for stringent police action. “Public places like hospitals must remain safe. The accused must be punished to prevent such incidents from recurring,” he emphasized.

Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the law-and-order situation in the state, highlighting the urgent need for measures to ensure public safety.
