According to co-founder Cameron Adams, Canva aims to make design accessible to everyone.

Cameron Adams, co-founder and chief product officer of Canva, is visiting India for the first time.

While Adobe dominates the graphics software market, Canva is gaining traction with its user-friendly tools and AI features. Valued at $32 billion, Canva is focused on democratizing design, particularly in India, where it is experiencing notable growth.

When discussing design tools, Adobe often comes to mind, as Adobe Photoshop holds a significant 42% share of the global graphics software market, according to Statista. Following Photoshop are InDesign and Illustrator, which occupy the second and third positions, respectively. Although Canva holds a 10.3% market share, it remains popular among non-designers due to its intuitive interface.

“In India—our fourth-largest market—we see significant growth potential. We have doubled our local team and are dedicated to creating a truly local experience with region-specific content and language support,” Adams stated during his visit. Canva boasts over 240,000 freelancers and more than 10,000 teachers in India, primarily utilizing its presentation and social media templates. In 2024, over 139 million presentations, including resumes, business proposals, pitch decks, and Instagram posts with quotes, were created in India.

Canva’s Magic Studio tools support various Indian languages, including Assamese, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Maithili, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, and Telugu. The Photo Background Remover is the most utilized AI feature in India, and the country ranks among the top three globally for using Canva’s video editing tool and website builder.

Regarding competition with companies like Adobe, Adams remarked, “In the competitive design space, we empower those who wouldn’t traditionally consider themselves creative.” He emphasized that Canva’s mission is to democratize design, noting that when it launched in 2012, creating compelling visuals required expensive software and specialized knowledge.

Initially focused on social media graphics, Canva has since expanded into presentations and now has around 220 million monthly users who create videos, websites, t-shirts, tote bags, and a variety of other products. The platform is not only utilized by individuals and small businesses but also by larger teams, enterprises with over a thousand employees, major non-profits, and educational institutions, all leveraging Canva for enhanced SEO and creative purposes.
