Canada’s foreign minister provides a straightforward reason for the booing of the national anthem: ‘We feel insulted.’

**Tensions Rise Between the U.S. and Canada at 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament**

Tensions between the United States and Canada took the spotlight at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, a situation that Canada’s foreign minister attributes to significant underlying issues. The political discord began during an NHL game on February 1, when fans of the Ottawa Senators booed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” This sentiment was echoed by Toronto Raptors fans the following day, but the situation escalated at the hockey tournament, where the booing garnered national attention.

The Canadian fans’ actions appeared to be a reaction to former President Donald Trump’s comments regarding tariffs and the notion of making Canada the 51st state. Following Canada’s victory over Team USA, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the controversy on social media, stating, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.”

The booing trend has persisted at various sporting events, with New York Rangers fans also booing the Canadian anthem during a recent game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Trump’s tariffs set to take effect this week, Canadian hockey fans are expected to continue expressing their discontent at games, according to Mélanie Joly, Canada’s foreign minister.

“This is not a joke anymore. This is not something we laugh at,” Joly remarked during a Tuesday appearance on BBC’s “Newsnight.” “We’ve had enough with this rhetoric. No Canadians are having fun with this. And there’s a reason why Canadians, when they go out to a hockey game, are booing the American national anthem. We’re insulted. We’re mad. We’re angry.”

Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. Energy imports from Canada, including oil, natural gas, and electricity, are also subject to a 10% tax. These tariffs went into effect on Tuesday, prompting Trudeau to announce retaliatory measures.
