Electric spoons, AI running shoes: The best (and worst) tech gadgets

The world’s largest technology exhibition, CES, provided an exciting preview of the future: a hopeful yet occasionally dystopian landscape filled with technology aimed at enhancing connectivity and convenience in our lives. The Las Vegas event showcased the highs and lows of the tech industry in 2025, where Nvidia dominates, AI is integrated into nearly everything, and a wide array of connected devices are set to invade our homes, many of which lack a compelling purpose.

**Highlights from CES**

**Kirin’s Electric Salt Spoon**
This innovative product from Kirin Holdings, traditionally known for its beverages, is a unique soup spoon that enhances the saltiness of food without adding actual salt. Utilizing a mild electric current, the spoon intensifies umami and salt flavors, helping users reduce their sodium intake. Priced at around $200, it is currently available in Japan and will be released globally in 2025. The spoon garnered significant attention at CES, with many eager attendees lining up to experience its effects.

**Samsung’s Smart Home Robot, Ballie**
2025 is poised to be the year of robotics, with Samsung unveiling its home robot, Ballie, which has been in development since 2020. Set to be available for purchase this year, Ballie is an AI companion equipped with sensors and a projector for games and movies. It can monitor pets and manage home appliances while being voice-activated and mobile. Featuring both a 2K rear camera and a 4K front camera, Ballie is expected to launch in the first half of 2025, with pricing details yet to be announced. Experts suggest that Ballie may redefine consumer robotics by striking a balance between functionality and approachability.
