**India’s Defence Budget Set for Significant Boost Post-Operation Sindoor**

India’s defence budget is poised for a substantial increase, with plans to allocate funds for new weapons, ammunition, and advanced technology following the successful Operation Sindoor. Sources indicate that a proposal for an additional Rs 50,000 crore through a supplementary budget is on the table, which may gain approval during the upcoming Winter session of Parliament. This extra funding is expected to address the armed forces’ needs, essential procurements, and research and development initiatives.

In the current fiscal year, the Union Budget has earmarked a record Rs 6.81 lakh crore for defence, marking a 9.53% rise from the previous year. Since the NDA government took office, the defence budget has nearly tripled over the last decade, increasing from Rs 2.29 lakh crore in 2014-15 to the current allocation, which constitutes 13.45% of the total budget.

Operation Sindoor, which involved the destruction of nine terror camps deep within Pakistan without breaching the border, highlighted India’s advanced defence capabilities. During the conflict, India’s multi-layered air defence system, featuring indigenous technology, effectively neutralized nearly all incoming missiles and drones. The deployment of the long-range Russian S-400 ‘Triumf’ system, alongside the Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missile system and the indigenous Akash system, played a crucial role in countering threats from Pakistani drones and missiles. Additionally, proven air defence systems such as the Pechora, OSA-AK, and low-level air defence guns were utilized.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the success of Operation Sindoor in his address on May 12, stating, “During this operation, the credibility of our Made-in-India weapons was firmly established. The world now recognizes that the time for Made-in-India defence equipment in 21st-century warfare has arrived.”

As India continues to enhance its defence capabilities, the proposed budget increase reflects a commitment to maintaining national security and advancing military technology.
