For many years, Lifebuoy has been known as a germ-fighting soap. That’s going to shift soon.

**Lifebuoy Repositions Brand Amidst Declining Hygiene Soap Demand**

The Indian soap industry, valued at around ₹25,000 crores according to NielsenIQ, is facing a slowdown in growth. Lifebuoy, a leading soap brand in India with sales exceeding ₹2,000 crores, is undergoing a significant transformation. A senior executive at Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) indicated that Lifebuoy will shift its focus from ‘germ protection’ to a broader ‘skin protection’ category due to declining sales in the hygiene soap segment.

Vipul Mathur, executive director of personal care at HUL, stated that this transformation involves not only a change in brand positioning but also updates to packaging and communication strategies. Lifebuoy will now emphasize “skin protection,” addressing issues like rashes, itches, and acne, while modernizing its image. The packaging will be redesigned to appear more contemporary and premium.

Additionally, Lifebuoy plans to expand into body wash categories, where it currently has limited presence compared to competitors like Lux and Dove. Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan has been enlisted for the brand’s relaunch, which includes new marketing initiatives aimed at boosting sales. New packaging has already been introduced in select markets, accompanied by a large promotional campaign at the ongoing Mahakumbh religious festival.

The pandemic previously increased demand for germ-protection brands, but that demand has since stabilized. Consumers are now seeking products with advanced features and effective ingredients. Mathur noted that as education and income levels rise, consumers increasingly desire more sophisticated hygiene solutions, a trend observed even in rural areas.

HUL also markets soaps and body washes under other brands such as Lux, Dove, and Pears. In the last fiscal year, the personal care segment, which includes soaps and toothpaste, generated revenues of ₹9,412 crores, accounting for 15.5% of HUL’s total standalone revenues of ₹60,469 crores.
