Globalstar, the satellite connectivity partner of Apple, has initiated its entry into the Indian market.

**Globalstar Takes Initial Steps to Launch Emergency SOS Service in India**

Globalstar, a US-based company known for its satellite communication services, is making strides to introduce its emergency SOS service in India. This service enables iPhone users to send emergency text messages and share their locations in areas lacking cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. The company has submitted an application to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), the central agency overseeing space activities in India, to facilitate its entry into the Indian market.

While this application marks the beginning of Globalstar’s journey in India, it is essential for the company to obtain a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to secure the necessary spectrum and operate its gateways within the country. As of now, Globalstar has not yet applied for this GMPCS license.

The move to expand into India aligns with the growing interest in satellite communication services among competitors. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is currently finalizing recommendations regarding satellite spectrum allocation, pricing, and other conditions. Once approved, this will enable companies like Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd to provide satellite broadband services in India. Applications from other major players, including Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper, are still under review.

KPMG projects that India’s satellite communication sector will experience significant growth, expanding from $2.3 billion in March 2024 to an estimated $20 billion by 2028. Globalstar has expressed its intention to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in India, aiming to secure GMPCS authorization and comply with rollout conditions to deliver emergency communication services effectively.

The company also plans to set up earth station gateways in India, enhancing its operational capabilities. As of now, inquiries sent to Globalstar regarding its plans in India and its application with IN-SPACe have not received a response.
