India has witnessed a fourfold increase in cybercrimes, with Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh being the most affected states.

**Surge in Cybercrimes: A Growing Concern for India**

The Indian government has reported a staggering increase in cybercrimes, including digital arrests, sextortion, online fraud, and cyberattacks, which have surged fourfold over the past four years. In a written response to Parliament, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revealed that reported cybercrimes exceeded 2.2 million in 2024, a dramatic rise from 450,000 in 2021, marking an increase of over 401%.

States such as Gujarat, Odisha, and Karnataka have experienced the most significant spikes in cybercrime rates, with increases of 824%, 783%, and 763%, respectively. By June 30 of this year, the number of reported cybercrimes had already reached 1.2 million, surpassing the annual totals for both 2022 and 2021. Maharashtra emerged as the most affected state in 2025, with 160,000 cases, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh with 140,000 and Karnataka with 100,000. Notably, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have consistently ranked as the top two states most impacted by cybercrimes over the last three years.

**Children at Risk**

A particularly alarming trend is the rise in cybercrimes targeting children. Data from the ministry indicates that over 3,000 cases related to the sharing and dissemination of child pornography were reported between 2018 and 2022. Additionally, more than 500 cases of cyberstalking against minors under 18 were documented during this period. The increase in online crimes against children has been significant, with a 25% rise in 2021 and a further 32.5% in 2022. These incidents often occur in social media, chat rooms, and online gaming environments. Last year, investigative efforts uncovered a network of Telegram channels distributing child pornography, leading to the removal of these accounts by the platform.

**Rising Cyberattacks**

The frequency of cyberattacks has also escalated dramatically. A report from the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) indicated that India faced an average of 761 cyberattack attempts per minute last year. The healthcare sector was the primary target, followed by hospitality and banking. Following the Pahalgam terror attack in 2025, India experienced a significant escalation, with over 1.5 million cyberattacks aimed at critical infrastructure, including defense, power, telecommunications, finance, and transportation sectors. These coordinated attacks were attributed to Pakistan and allied hacking groups.

In conclusion, the alarming rise in cybercrimes and cyberattacks poses a significant threat to individuals and national security in India. As these incidents continue to escalate, it is crucial for authorities to implement robust measures to combat this growing menace.
