IndiGo is counting on international growth to fuel its expansion plans.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share and fleet size, aims to double its size and capacity by 2030 to establish itself as a global aviation player. According to CEO Pieter Elbers, the airline anticipates that its growth will primarily stem from international operations. “A few years ago, our share of international operations was just over 20%. In less than three years, that percentage increased to 28% last quarter. As India evolves, internationalization will continue,” Elbers stated in a recent interview.

To support this expansion, IndiGo has already ordered the Airbus XLR, expected to arrive by the end of 2025, and the Airbus A350, scheduled for 2027. Before the A350’s introduction, the airline is exploring the temporary addition of some widebody aircraft. “This will be a temporary solution, and while it may not be identical to the typical IndiGo experience, we aim to make it as close as possible,” Elbers noted.

By 2030, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., IndiGo aspires to transition from a primarily domestic airline to a global aviation player. The A350 will play a crucial role in this strategy. “Indian customers will receive a product tailored to their needs,” he added, without providing specific details. “We will maintain a competitive and effective cost structure.”

India’s aviation sector is poised for growth as travel demand increases with rising incomes. Driven by festive demand, Indian airlines transported a record 42.8 million domestic passengers from October to December, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Consultancy firm EY India views the rapid expansion of India’s aviation market as a significant opportunity for local airlines to meet the growing demand for both domestic and international travel.

“To fully capitalize on this potential, it is essential to develop a comprehensive strategy that addresses the challenges posed by established global players while positioning Indian carriers as competitive and innovative leaders,” said Bhavana Yerrumreddy, partner-aviation at EY India. “Key focus areas should include enhancing operational efficiency, investing in modern fleets, strengthening route networks, and providing superior customer experiences.
