**Nurse’s Suicide Attempt Highlights Police Inaction on Sexual Assault Complaints in Jharkhand**

A nurse in Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand, attempted suicide by ingesting poison within the Mahila Police Station premises, citing prolonged inaction on her sexual abuse complaint against a fourth-year MBBS student. This alarming incident has raised significant concerns regarding the handling of sexual assault cases and the sensitivity of law enforcement officials.

On Tuesday, the nurse consumed poison at the women’s police station, causing panic among the staff. She was swiftly transported to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition. Fortunately, doctors later confirmed that her condition has stabilized, and she is now out of danger.

The woman, a resident of Barkagaon, accused Vikas Kumar Mehta, a fourth-year MBBS student at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and a resident of Harli village, of sexually assaulting her under the pretense of marriage. In her complaint, she detailed that the first incident occurred at Swarn Jayanti Park in Hazaribagh, followed by another incident in her village. Despite filing a formal complaint with the police, she alleged that no substantial action was taken against the accused.

“I lost all hope of getting justice,” she reportedly expressed to officials, explaining her desperate decision. She also criticized the Mahila Police Station in-charge for being insensitive to her situation. The woman claimed that during her visit to the police station on July 8, she was told that such incidents “happen everywhere in parks” and was dismissed without meaningful assistance, further eroding her trust in the system.

Adding to the complexity of the case, the nurse’s family alleged that the accused’s mother initially approached them with a marriage proposal. However, they later claimed that demands for a substantial dowry emerged, exacerbating the woman’s mental distress.

Following the suicide attempt, senior police officials, including CCR DSP Manoj Kumar Singh and Mahila Police Station in-charge Vindhyavasini Sinha, arrived at the scene. DSP Manoj Kumar Singh stated that the matter is under investigation, emphasizing that all aspects of the allegations are being thoroughly examined. “A clear statement will be made once the investigation is complete,” he assured.

This incident has sparked widespread concern regarding the delays in police action in cases involving allegations of sexual assault, highlighting the urgent need for reform in how such complaints are handled.
