‘Like a giant Squid Game’: soul searching in South Korea after latest celebrity suicide

On Friday, South Korean columnist Yang Sung-hee posed a question that remains unanswered: “When will this ever end? How many more lives must be lost before this tragic cycle is broken?” This inquiry, featured in the Korea JoongAng Daily, reflects the growing concerns following the death of actor Kim Sae-ron, who was found dead in her Seoul home on Sunday, with authorities treating the case as a suicide. She was just 24 years old.

Kim’s career began as a child actor, gaining fame from her role in the 2010 crime thriller The Man from Nowhere. In May 2022, she faced legal issues after a drink-driving incident that resulted in her crashing into a tree and an electrical transformer in Seoul. Following the incident, Kim issued a handwritten apology on Instagram and paid a fine of 200 million won ($139,000), also compensating numerous businesses affected by the power outage caused by the crash. While this may have satisfied some business owners, it did little to quell the significant backlash she faced online and in the media.

Her death has sparked discussions about the immense pressures faced by young artists in South Korea, who are often subjected to rigorous schedules and strict limitations on their personal lives, including dating, socializing, and even dietary choices. Negative portrayals of her private life circulated on YouTube, with some critics using her social media posts with friends as evidence of her lack of remorse. As a result, her career suffered greatly; many of her scenes in the 2023 Netflix series Bloodhounds were cut, and she had to withdraw from the TV drama Trolley.

In an effort to regain stability, Kim took a job at a coffee shop, which led to accusations that she was overstating her financial difficulties. Her tragic passing adds to a troubling list of South Korean celebrities who have taken their own lives amid intense public scrutiny, reigniting discussions about the balance between celebrity privacy and media attention, as well as the toll it takes on mental health. Notable figures who have died by suicide include Lee Sun-kyun from Parasite in 2023, Choi Jin-sil in 2008, and K-pop stars Sulli and Goo Hara in 2019, along with Kim Jong-hyun of SHINee in 2017.

The pressure on South Korean celebrities, particularly women, to maintain a flawless public image can hinder their ability to find work after legal troubles. Many hesitate to seek mental health support for fear of exacerbating negative media coverage. Peter Jongho Na, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University, likened South Korean society to a “giant Squid Game,” where individuals who falter are harshly eliminated without the opportunity for recovery.
