Looking for a salary increase? LTI Mindtree advises its employees to pass an examination first.

LTIMindtree, which concluded the previous year with $4.29 billion in revenue, evaluates its employees based on their experience. According to employees, the competency exam is part of a new framework called My Career My Growth, which was introduced last year for senior executives and has since been expanded to include more employees. Senior managers at LTIMindtree Ltd are required to pass a competency exam as part of the annual appraisal process, potentially making it the first of its kind in the country’s $286 billion IT sector. For project leads, managers, and lead architects, half of the appraisal weight is based on project completion, while the other half is determined by a competency exam featuring multiple-choice questions on coding and mathematics.

Reactions to this initiative have been mixed. One employee, speaking anonymously, described the competency exam as a skill-based assessment that becomes more challenging with increased experience. Another employee suggested that the exam was implemented to limit salary increases, although the company has a different perspective. An LTIMindtree spokesperson stated, “Our performance management process integrates competency-linked goals alongside project-specific goals. We believe both are equally important in assessing the overall annual performance of our talent, and as a result, they carry equal weight.” The spokesperson further explained that the company regularly evaluates employee competencies through objective assessments to minimize subjectivity and ensure readiness for client demands. This approach also allows employees to define their career goals, identify skill gaps, and pursue targeted learning paths for continuous development in line with changing business needs.

LTIMindtree categorizes its employees based on experience levels, with P0 and P1 referring to engineering graduates and trainees, while P3, P4, and P5 denote managers, team leads, and lead architects with over four years of experience at the company. The competency exam was initially introduced for those at the P5 level last year, but it has now been extended to P4 and P3 employees as well. An analyst noted that such competency-based exams are not commonly found in other IT services companies, while another analyst mentioned that these assessments are designed to evaluate the technical skills of senior employees.
