Newsom encounters strong criticism after discussing the ‘fairness issue’ regarding transgender participation in women’s sports.

California Governor Gavin Newsom faced criticism on Thursday for his remarks regarding transgender participation in women’s and girls’ sports during the first episode of his podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom.” Guest Charlie Kirk, a well-known conservative and founder of Turning Point USA, questioned Newsom about the fairness of allowing transgender athletes to compete in female categories.

Kirk pointed out a specific case, stating, “The young man who’s about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports, that shouldn’t happen. You, as the governor, should step out and say no. Would you do something like that? Would you say no men in female sports?”

In response, Newsom acknowledged the fairness issue, saying, “I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair.” However, when pressed further about a recent victory by a transgender athlete at Jurupa Valley High School, Newsom did not directly address the win but reiterated that it was a fairness issue.

He added, “There’s also a humility and a grace. … These poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression. And the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well.” Newsom emphasized the need to approach the topic with decency, acknowledging the complexities involved.

Despite agreeing with Kirk on the fairness aspect, California has resisted former President Donald Trump’s executive order prohibiting biological males from competing in women’s sports. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) recently stated it would continue to allow transgender athletes to participate in women’s and girls’ sports, citing state law that supports inclusion based on gender identity.

The CIF’s statement highlighted its commitment to providing students with opportunities to belong and compete in educational activities consistent with their gender identity.

Riley Gaines, a former NCAA athlete and advocate for fairness in women’s sports, was among those who criticized Newsom’s comments, while prominent LGBTQ advocates also weighed in on the discussion.
