Mason Alexander, an 18-year-old freshman football player for the Pittsburgh Panthers, tragically lost his life in a car accident in Indiana, according to officials. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred on Saturday night when a white 2016 BMW 340 attempted to overtake a southbound 2015 Toyota RAV4 by veering into the northbound lane. The BMW driver, aware of the potential for a collision as they crested a hill, swerved to the right to avoid the Toyota.
However, the BMW skidded through the grass, struck a tree, and subsequently caught fire. The driver of the Toyota collided with a mailbox. Alexander was identified as a passenger in the BMW.
Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi expressed his sorrow in a statement, saying, “I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher, or coach ever wants to get — the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life. Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing. Mason had just enrolled at Pitt in January after graduating early from Hamilton Southeastern High School in Indiana. Even in that brief time, he made a significant impact on all of us.”
Narduzzi continued, “Mason was proud and excited to be a Panther, and we felt the same way about having him in our Pitt family. He will always be a Panther to us. The Alexander family and Mason’s many loved ones and friends will be in our prayers.”
Before joining Pittsburgh, Alexander attended Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers and enrolled early to participate in spring practice. He was recognized as a three-star cornerback recruit by 247 Sports and ranked among the top 300 high school players for the class of 2025 by ESPN.
