Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with Ethiopia’s highest award, the “Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia,” at the Addis International Convention Centre on Tuesday. This recognition celebrates his significant contributions to enhancing the partnership between India and Ethiopia, as well as his visionary leadership on the global stage.

During the award ceremony, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, stating that it was a privilege to receive such an honor from one of the world’s oldest civilizations. He dedicated the award to all individuals, both Indian and Ethiopian, who have played a role in nurturing the bilateral relationship over the years, conveying his heartfelt appreciation on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians. “To be honored by a very ancient and prosperous civilization of the world is a matter of great pride for me. On behalf of all Indians, I humbly accept this honor. This award is for all those numerous Indians who shaped our partnership,” PM Modi remarked.

In a post on social media platform X, he reiterated, “I am honoured to be conferred with the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’ and dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India.”

Earlier that day, PM Modi arrived in Addis Ababa from Jordan, marking the second leg of his three-nation tour. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali personally welcomed him at the airport and, in a rare gesture, drove him to his hotel, symbolizing the close ties and mutual respect between the two leaders as they work to further strengthen their bilateral relationship.

During his visit, Modi explored the Science Museum and Friendship Park, which were not part of the official itinerary. The two leaders also participated in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, where PM Ali introduced Modi to various Ethiopian coffee varieties during their informal discussions.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that this visit underscores the importance both nations place on their partnership as Global South allies. Over the course of his two-day visit, PM Modi is set to engage in discussions with Ethiopian leaders on various aspects of bilateral relations, address a joint session of parliament, and meet with the Indian diaspora. Notably, Addis Ababa serves as the headquarters of the African Union.

Following his time in Ethiopia, PM Modi will continue his three-nation tour with a visit to Oman, after previously meeting with King Abdullah II in Jordan.
