People who fled their homes in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district following violence during anti-Waqf protests have begun to return, police said on Monday. Three people were killed and over 200 people were arrested after an angry mob vandalised shops and homes in Murshidabad. The violence had prompted many to flee their homes and move to neighbouring Malda district. The BJP had earlier alleged that more than 400 Hindus were driven out of Murshidabad amid the violence. However, Chief Mamata Banerjee had called for peace, accusing “some political parties” of attempting to exploit religious sentiments for political gain.Jawed Shamim, Additional Director General (ADG) of Police, Law and Order, West Bengal, said on Monday that several people have already returned to their villages in Murshidabad under police protection. Senior West Bengal Police officials, including the Director General of Police (DGP), are stationed in the district to oversee the situation, he said. “No fresh reports of violence have been received from Murshidabad since Saturday afternoon,” Shamim said, adding that the past 36 hours have remained peaceful. The official also advised against heeding to rumours, saying misinformation from outside the state continues to circulate and provoke unrest. Internet services have been temporarily suspended in some areas as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of fake news. Police have intensified route marches and picketing in sensitive areas like Jangipur and other parts of Murshidabad. Over 200 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.“We are identifying everyone involved, and nobody will be spared—whether they participated directly or incited violence,” said Shamim. He added that legal action is being taken against all those responsible, regardless of identity.Tthe Calcutta High Court earlier ordered the deployment of paramilitary forces in the district’s most sensitive areas. The court, acknowledging reports of widespread vandalism in several districts, emphasised that it could not “turn a blind eye” to the unfolding situation.advertisement in a formal or creative style for better SEO.Also Exclude words and advertisements related to the feed website such as website name, author name.
