Robbie Williams has revealed that he purchased Eric Morecambe’s glasses and pipe because he has always viewed the comedian as a sort of “uncle.” The singer expressed that he shed “happy, childlike tears” after placing the winning bid of £20,000 last month, which significantly surpassed the estimated range of £2,000 to £4,000. In an Instagram post showcasing photos of himself with the glasses and pipe, he mentioned that he treated himself to these items in celebration of his upcoming 51st birthday.
Williams recounted how he appointed Mike, a member of his team responsible for his digital presence, as the “chief bidder” while he was in Los Angeles preparing to board a flight as the auction began. He shared that he was able to watch the auction live, with his iPhone and Mike’s iPhone acting like walkie-talkies.
He humorously recalled asking his wife, “What should I do, Ayd’s?” to which she replied, “Keep bidding,” displaying the determination of someone ready to seize a great deal. This exchange repeated several times over the next ten minutes.
After winning the auction, Williams expressed his emotional reaction, stating, “You see, I guess we all need friends we never meet from off the telly. Eric has always been mine. An uncle of sorts.” He added, “To the very core of me, Eric Morecambe’s spirit has been salve for my soul.
