**Shantanu Naidu Appointed General Manager, Head of Strategic Initiatives at Tata Motors**
Shantanu Naidu has announced his new role as General Manager, Head of Strategic Initiatives at Tata Motors. Reflecting on this milestone, he shared on LinkedIn, “I’m excited to begin this new chapter! I fondly recall waiting for my father to return home from the Tata Motors plant, dressed in his white shirt and navy pants. It feels like a full-circle moment.”
An automobile design engineer by profession, Naidu gained recognition in 2014 for his innovative project aimed at protecting homeless dogs from speeding vehicles. His efforts caught the attention of Ratan Tata, who is known for his compassion towards stray animals. Tata not only supported Naidu’s initiative with funding but also took on the roles of mentor, boss, and close friend.
In 2018, Naidu joined Ratan Tata as his assistant, and their friendship has since garnered significant public interest, highlighted by a viral video of Naidu singing a birthday song for Tata.
Naidu completed his engineering degree at Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2014 and went on to earn his MBA from Cornell University in 2016. In his book, *I Came Upon a Lighthouse*, he offers a personal and humorous perspective on their unique friendship, focusing on the less visible aspects of Tata’s personality beyond his business achievements. Naidu expressed his desire to document their adventures rather than merely recount historical milestones, to which Tata agreed, acknowledging that no single book could encompass everything.
The bond between Naidu, a millennial, and Tata, an industry icon, provides a warm and humanized view of Ratan Tata’s life outside the corporate sphere. Notably, Tata relinquished ownership of Goodfellows, a venture initiated by Naidu in 2021 to assist elderly individuals living alone in India, and he also waived Naidu’s education loan in his will.
