Store-specific discounts: How BigBasket leverages location-based pricing to improve dark store profitability

**BigBasket Transforms Dark Stores into Integrated Quick Commerce Model**

BigBasket is revamping its dark stores into larger Integrated Big Basket Now (IBBN) stores to enhance its quick commerce capabilities. This strategic shift, initiated in early 2025, aims to meet the growing demand for faster delivery services amid fierce competition from rivals like Swiggy, Blinkit, and Zepto.

The IBBN stores, which span approximately 20,000 square feet and stock between 40,000 to 50,000 stock keeping units (SKUs), are designed to offer a broader range of products compared to traditional dark stores. This transformation began as a pilot project in select cities and has since expanded nationally due to its success. BigBasket’s original business model focused on scheduled delivery slots from larger warehouses, but the company has now fully pivoted to a quick commerce approach, integrating both traditional and rapid delivery services into a cohesive model that prioritizes speed.

According to industry insights, the success of these IBBN stores will depend on their economic viability. Each store must operate profitably, similar to any physical retail outlet. BigBasket has categorized its IBBN stores into two types: Unnati and Pragati. The Unnati stores, which means “growing,” currently handle about 500 orders daily, with a target of reaching 1,500 orders to achieve break-even. In contrast, Pragati stores, meaning “progress,” are already profitable, managing around 1,200 orders each day. The company aims to convert as many Unnati stores into Pragati stores as possible.

Currently, Bengaluru hosts 26 Unnati and 14 Pragati dark stores, reflecting BigBasket’s commitment to enhancing its quick commerce model. As the company continues to adapt to changing consumer preferences, the focus remains on delivering faster and more efficient service.
