Tata secures its first significant chip client, Intel.

**Tata Electronics Partners with Intel for Chip Manufacturing in India**

Tata Electronics has announced a significant partnership with Intel Corp, revealing plans to manufacture and assemble chips at its facilities in Gujarat and Assam. This collaboration marks Intel as Tata’s first major publicly announced client for its chip production capabilities. The agreement includes the assembly of laptops and desktops equipped with Intel’s chips, leveraging Tata’s domestic assembly facilities.

The assembly of Intel’s chips will take place at Tata’s outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) facility located in Jagiroad, Assam. Earlier this year, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw indicated that Tata’s chip testing plant is set to commence operations in April 2026, while the chip fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, is expected to start production by mid-2027.

Intel, which primarily operates its own fabrication plants in the United States, also collaborates with external manufacturing facilities like the one being established by Tata to scale chip production. According to a report by Gartner, Intel ranks as the third-largest chipmaker globally, following Nvidia and Samsung.

The partnership aims to address the increasing demand for artificial intelligence chips in laptops and desktops, with projections suggesting that India will emerge as one of the top five markets for these products by 2030. Notably, Tata Electronics also serves as an electronics manufacturing services partner for Apple, accounting for a significant portion of iPhone assembly in India.

While details regarding the establishment of a dedicated assembly line for Intel’s products remain unclear, the two companies have not disclosed the potential scale of their partnership. Intel has not yet filed this agreement with the Nasdaq exchange, where its shares are listed.

Intel’s CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, emphasized that this collaboration will enable the company to rapidly expand in one of the fastest-growing computing markets, driven by increasing PC demand and the swift adoption of AI technologies in India. Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, noted that this partnership would enhance cost competitiveness, accelerate time-to-market, and improve operational agility, positioning Intel to meet the rising demand for next-generation AI computing in India.

This deal comes at a challenging time for Intel’s leadership, as CEO Tan has faced scrutiny and calls for resignation earlier this year, which were later mitigated after he committed to aligning Intel with local manufacturing initiatives.
