**Tragic Stampede During TVK Campaign: Leaders Seek Bail**

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) general secretary Bushi Anand and joint secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar have approached the Madras High Court for anticipatory bail following a tragic stampede in Karur that resulted in the loss of 41 lives during a campaign event for party chief Vijay. This legal action comes after an FIR was lodged against them on Monday, which also led to the arrest of the party’s district secretary, Mathiyazhagan. Another TVK member, Masi Pounraj, was also detained on the same day.

In their anticipatory bail application, TVK contends that the primary cause of the stampede was inadequate police presence at the event. The petition highlights that the power supply was interrupted just five minutes after Vijay commenced his speech, asserting that the incident cannot be blamed on any intentional negligence by TVK officials. The party further claims that disruptive elements at the gathering caused injuries and chaos, contributing to the stampede. “The size of the crowd was unexpected. We did our utmost to manage the situation,” the plea stated. Additionally, it was noted that an ambulance driving through the crowd without a patient exacerbated the disorder. TVK maintains that the overwhelming number of attendees was the sole factor leading to the tragic event.

The FIR filed on Monday targets three senior leaders of the party: district secretary Mathiyazhagan, general secretary Bushi Anand, and joint secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar. Tamil Nadu Police have charged Mathiyazhagan in connection with the incident. According to law enforcement officials, the leaders face charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, and endangering life, as well as violations of the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992.

As the investigation unfolds, the implications of this tragic event continue to resonate within the community and the political landscape.
