Two months following its second financial aid, Vodafone Idea has again expressed concerns about its survival.

**Vodafone Idea Seeks Supreme Court Relief on AGR Dues Amid Financial Struggles**

Vodafone Idea has approached the Supreme Court, requesting a halt on the government’s pursuit of interest and penalties related to its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, as the moratorium period is set to conclude in September. The telecom operator’s future is precarious, with banks hesitant to extend loans due to its substantial outstanding dues.

In a court petition filed on May 13, Vodafone Idea expressed that without bank funding, it would be unable to sustain operations beyond the current fiscal year. The company highlighted its inability to meet the Department of Telecommunications’ demand for an ₹18,000 crore AGR installment due in March 2026. The petition, which has been reviewed, indicates that the company is seeking a waiver on interest, penalties, and additional charges, totaling over ₹45,000 crore, on its pending AGR dues of ₹83,400 crore.

The urgency of this plea follows a recent government decision in March to convert ₹36,950 crore of statutory dues into equity, increasing the government’s stake in Vodafone Idea to 49%. Despite this conversion, the company has struggled to secure debt funding from banks, which have cited the need for a resolution regarding the large annual AGR installments before proceeding.

As of the end of March, Vodafone Idea’s total government dues exceeded ₹2 trillion, comprising approximately ₹1.19 trillion in spectrum dues alongside the AGR obligations. The company warned that its current fundraising efforts would soon be exhausted, potentially halting its capital expenditure cycle. This situation could undermine the value of the government’s equity stake and jeopardize the revival efforts made by both the company and the government.

Without the necessary funding, Vodafone Idea’s planned investments and operational improvements are at risk, raising concerns about the company’s ability to recover and meet its financial obligations.
