The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, along with another individual, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption related to the Faceless Scheme of Income Tax Assessment. This scheme was established to enhance transparency and minimize direct interactions between taxpayers and tax officials.

The case involves the Deputy Commissioner, two inspectors from the Income Tax Department, five Chartered Accountants, a private individual, and several unidentified persons. They are accused of attempting to compromise the integrity of the Faceless Scheme, which was designed to eliminate the need for physical meetings between taxpayers and tax authorities.

The arrested officer, identified as Vijayendra, is alleged to have conspired with co-accused Dinesh Agarwal and others to secure financial gains by promising favorable outcomes on income tax returns for individuals undergoing high-value assessments. The Faceless Scheme aims to reduce discretion and opportunities for corruption by ensuring that assessees do not know the identity of the assessing officer handling their case.

However, the accused reportedly collected and shared confidential insider information regarding the scheme, including the names of assessment officers and the specific issues under review. This sensitive information was allegedly used to solicit bribes from taxpayers involved in high-value assessments or appeals.

Following the arrests, the CBI conducted searches on February 6 at 18 locations across various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Thane, West Champaran (Bihar), Bengaluru, and Kottayam (Kerala). During these operations, investigators recovered numerous incriminating documents, evidence of bribe transactions, and digital data.

The CBI initiated a preliminary inquiry based on a complaint from the Income Tax Department. Upon discovering prima facie evidence, the agency registered the case. The arrested individuals are currently being presented before the appropriate jurisdictional court, and the investigation is ongoing.

**FAQ Section:**
