British actor Julian Holloway, renowned for his roles in eight Carry On films, has passed away at the age of 80. His theatrical agency, Sharkey and Co, announced that he died on Sunday at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset following “a brief illness.” Another agency, Damn Good Voices, conveyed to the Press Association that he will be greatly missed.
In the 1960s and 70s, Holloway portrayed various characters in the beloved Carry On film series, including Carry On Doctor, Carry On Up The Khyber, and Carry On Camping. He was the father of Sophie Dahl, a supermodel turned author, born in 1976 to British actress Tessa Dahl, who is the daughter of famed children’s author Roald Dahl.
During the 1970s, Holloway also appeared in television series such as Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?, The New Avengers, and The Professionals, continuing his acting career into the 80s and 90s with roles in Doctor Who and Rumpole of the Bailey. His film credits include The Rum Diary, featuring Johnny Depp, and A Christmas Carol alongside Jim Carrey.
Heartfelt tributes have emerged from the entertainment industry. Actress Sarah Douglas, known for her role as Ursa in Superman, expressed her sorrow on Facebook, describing her longtime friend as “the wittiest of men.” Author Morris Bright referred to Holloway as “an accomplished actor” and shared images on X, noting his ability to excel in both comedic and serious roles.
