KLM, the flag carrier of the Netherlands, is set to enhance its operations in India by launching flights to Hyderabad in September, as stated by president and CEO Marjan Rintel in a recent interview. The airline will utilize Boeing 777 aircraft for the Amsterdam-Hyderabad route, marking its fourth destination in India. Rintel expressed admiration for the growth of India’s aviation sector and indicated that KLM plans to invest further in the country. The airline anticipates an increase in demand and expects to maintain its partnership with IndiGo, despite the latter’s plans to introduce direct flights to Europe.
KLM has been operating in India for 70 years and is committed to expanding its presence by adding new destinations. The strong relationship between the Netherlands and India drives KLM to seek new opportunities, with Hyderabad being the latest addition to its network, in collaboration with IndiGo through codesharing.
India’s aviation market is thriving, fueled by a growing middle class eager to travel. The demand for air travel has doubled compared to pre-COVID levels, and KLM recognizes the significance of Hyderabad, especially for cargo operations, given the influx of Dutch businesses in the region. The airline is open to exploring more options as demand continues to rise.
While there are challenges related to regulations and entry approvals, Rintel believes that the opportunities in the expanding market outweigh these hurdles. KLM is not only focusing on increasing destinations and flight frequencies but is also strengthening its long-term partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which has been instrumental in KLM’s digital transformation over the past 30 years.
Regarding competition, Rintel acknowledged the rapid growth of the Indian market and IndiGo’s plans to expand into Europe. However, she emphasized the enduring relationship between KLM and IndiGo, highlighting the advantages of their collaboration and reaffirming KLM’s commitment to investing in India.
