American hockey player Charlie McAvoy is being commended for his powerful hit on Canada’s Connor McDavid during a thrilling 4 Nations match.

The highly anticipated 4 Nations Face-Off matchup between the U.S. and Canada sparked widespread discussion among sports fans, particularly regarding the booing of the national anthem and the three fights that erupted within the first nine seconds of the game. However, what often gets overlooked is the resilience the U.S. demonstrated to secure the victory and advance to the finals.

Canada’s Connor McDavid quickly opened the scoring, igniting excitement among Canadian fans. Yet, the U.S. aimed to shift the momentum right away, and they believed Charlie McAvoy played a crucial role in doing just that. McAvoy delivered a significant hit on McDavid in the first period, and just 19 seconds later, Jake Guentzel found the back of the net, leveling the score against goalie Jordan Binnington. Matthew Tkachuk emphasized that McAvoy’s hit was pivotal for the team’s morale.

“That was a message-sending moment — probably one of the plays of the game,” said Tkachuk, a star for the Florida Panthers. “They had just scored, the crowd was electric, and Charlie stepped up with one of the hardest hits I’ve seen.”

Tkachuk noted that McAvoy’s teammates were inspired by his aggressive play. U.S. defenseman Zach Werenski echoed this sentiment, stating, “That hit Charlie threw on (McDavid) was kind of a game-changer. He’s known for that. He’s great with his size, defensively sound, and that was a perfectly timed hit to get our team going.”

In the second period, Dylan Larkin put the U.S. ahead 2-1, and Guentzel later sealed the game with an empty-net goal, leading to a U.S. victory. Despite the loss, McDavid remained optimistic about Canada’s chances of bouncing back for a rematch.

“It was fast, tight-checking, competitive, emotional,” he reflected. “It had everything you would want in a hockey game. It’s disappointing it didn’t go our way, but this isn’t over yet.”

The U.S. will face Sweden, while Canada will take on Finland in the final games leading up to the championship.
