**Hindustan Unilever Shares Surge Following Leadership Change**

Shares of Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) experienced a notable increase of up to 4.61% in early trading on Friday, following the announcement of Priya Nair as the new managing director and chief executive. This leadership transition is seen as a significant move by parent company Unilever to reinvigorate growth in its second-largest market. Nair, who currently serves as the president of beauty and wellbeing at Unilever, will officially assume her role on August 1, succeeding Rohit Jawa, who will step down on July 31. Notably, Nair will be the first woman to lead the consumer goods giant in India.

The appointment comes at a critical time for HUL, which has been facing challenges such as sluggish demand, margin pressures, and heightened competition from digital-first and regional brands. Analysts have responded positively to the leadership change, highlighting Nair’s extensive knowledge of the Indian market and her proven track record in execution. Nomura analysts expressed that this shift signifies Unilever’s strong commitment to enhancing performance in India, maintaining a ‘buy’ rating with a target price of ₹2,600.

Nair brings nearly three decades of experience with Unilever, having held significant leadership positions at HUL, including overseeing the home care and beauty sectors. During her tenure as executive director of home care, she successfully improved segment margins by 570 basis points from FY14 to FY20. Following her leadership in beauty and personal care, she took on global responsibilities within the company.

In addition to her new role, Nair will join the HUL board, pending necessary approvals, and will remain a member of Unilever’s leadership executive. Abneesh Roy from Nuvama Institutional Equities anticipates that Nair will adopt an aggressive approach as managing director, leveraging her strong credentials and experience to focus on growth segments, innovation, and purpose-driven brands.

HUL has faced difficulties in sustaining growth in recent quarters, reporting only 2% volume growth for FY25, consistent with the previous year. While its laundry segment remained stable, other categories such as beauty, personal care, and packaged foods have encountered challenges due to inflation and rising competition. The company’s volume growth has not exceeded 5% in the past six years.

Jefferies noted that HUL’s performance has been lackluster for several quarters and outlined expectations for Nair’s leadership. They anticipate her to prioritize maintaining core market share in soaps, beauty, and tea, while also focusing on premiumization, portfolio investments, and addressing underperforming assets like Horlicks. Jefferies emphasized the need for HUL to adapt to emerging trends, particularly in response to the growing consumer demand for nutrition.
