British tennis star Emma Raducanu was visibly upset while speaking with the umpire during her match at the Dubai Championships on Monday, following an incident involving a spectator who displayed “fixated behavior.” This occurred during Raducanu’s second-round match against Karolina Muchova, where the broadcast captured the distressed player in a confined area between the umpire’s chair and the barrier netting next to Court 2.
Details surrounding the incident remain unclear. Ultimately, Raducanu lost the match in straight sets, with scores of 7-6 (6), 6-4.
On Wednesday, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) issued a statement regarding the security situation. “Emma Raducanu was approached in a public area by a man who exhibited fixated behavior,” the WTA reported. “This individual was later identified in the front rows during Emma’s match on Tuesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and was subsequently removed from the venue. He will be banned from all WTA events pending a threat assessment.”
The WTA emphasized, “Player safety is our top priority, and we advise tournaments on security best practices for international sporting events. The WTA is actively collaborating with Emma and her team to ensure her well-being and provide any necessary support. We remain committed to working with tournaments and their security teams globally to maintain a safe environment for all players.”
Raducanu gained international fame after her unexpected Grand Slam victory as a teenager. In 2022, she was still a teenager when a man in Britain was convicted of stalking her at her family home in 2021.
