The BYU Cougars triumphed over the Arizona Wildcats in a thrilling matchup on Saturday night, marked by a contentious call, a player altercation, and an inappropriate chant from the Tucson crowd. The final score was 96-95 in favor of the Cougars.
With less than 12 seconds remaining, Arizona had possession of the ball. Caleb Love attempted a heroic play and was fouled while shooting. However, instead of being awarded a chance for a three-point play, he was given only two free throws, which he successfully converted, putting Arizona ahead 95-94.
BYU quickly advanced the ball, and star player Richie Saunders drove towards the basket. After a challenging attempt, he fell, leading to a late foul call against Arizona’s Trey Townsend. Saunders made both free throws, securing the victory for BYU.
Tensions flared post-game as players had to be separated during the handshake line. Additionally, fans of the No. 19-ranked Wildcats were heard chanting an offensive phrase directed at BYU as the team exited the court.
Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd expressed his disagreement with the late foul call, stating, “It’s a bad call. You hate for a game to be decided by that. (Townsend) played good defense. The guy’s pivoting, throws his shoulder into him, and falls down. It’s a foul with two seconds to go. I mean, listen, it’s the Big 12. That’s what I’m told. And the guy who called it is one of the best refs. So we’ve got to live with it.”
In response to the fan behavior, Arizona officials issued an apology. Athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois stated, “On behalf of the University of Arizona Athletic Department, we apologize to BYU, their student-athletes, coaches, and fans. The chant is not reflective of who we are and should not have happened.
