Female athletes are urging Senate Democrats to support the passage of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act is scheduled for a vote in the U.S. Senate on Monday. This legislation aims to create a stronger federal standard to prevent transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports, as several states are resisting President Donald Trump’s recent executive order on the matter. Despite the Republican majority in the Senate, the bill requires the backing of seven Democrats to overcome the filibuster and be sent to the president. In the House of Representatives, nearly all Democrats, except for two, opposed the bill. Women athletes nationwide who have been affected by the inclusion of transgender individuals in sports are hopeful that some Democratic senators will diverge from the party’s typical position.

Brooke Slusser, a former volleyball player at San Jose State University who gained national attention after suing her school, conference, and the NCAA over her experience with a transgender teammate, is urging Democrats to consider the implications for their daughters and other young female athletes. “Do they have kids? Would they want their daughter to face a situation where a male athlete could potentially harm them during a game? It’s a serious concern that could end a young athlete’s career,” Slusser expressed.

Her lawsuits claim she was required to share changing and sleeping facilities with her transgender teammate, Blaire Fleming, during their first season together in 2023. After months of advocating against transgender inclusion and receiving significant media coverage, Slusser decided to leave the SJSU campus due to alleged threats and harassment from peers regarding her views. Nevertheless, she stands by her actions, believing her activism has contributed to potential legislative changes, including the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.

Additionally, fellow athletes Payton McNabb and Selina Soule visited the White House to meet with U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and various state attorneys general to share their experiences and advocate for a national ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports. Soule, a former high school track and field athlete and four-time National Qualifier, was forced out of a regional championship due to two transgender athletes taking spots designated for women, which hindered her chances of attracting college scouts and securing scholarships. This pivotal moment in her life propelled her into activism, where she began formally voicing her opposition to transgender inclusion in sports.
