**Fighting Illini’s Halftime Jersey Retirement Ceremony Goes Awry**
During a halftime ceremony at the State Farm Center, the University of Illinois honored former men’s basketball star Terrence Shannon Jr. by retiring his jersey. However, the moment took an unexpected turn when Shannon unveiled his No. 0 jersey only to find it displayed upside down.
Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman addressed the mishap following the Fighting Illini’s 79-65 loss to Michigan State, acknowledging the unfortunate error. “Before we get into the substance of the game tonight, obviously, we had a regrettable situation at halftime with the jersey around [Shannon’s] celebration,” he stated. “It’s a shame that it happened that way. I didn’t hang the jersey, but I’m ultimately responsible for everything that happens in this building, and that means this was on me tonight. We need to understand that while mistakes happen, there are certain moments where they can’t. We stole that moment from [Shannon], and we apologize to him and his family, as well as our fans who were excited to be part of this experience.”
Shannon, who was selected 27th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, played a pivotal role in leading the Fighting Illini to the Elite Eight in the recent NCAA Tournament, averaging 23 points per game. His contributions helped the team reach this stage for the first time since 2005.
Despite facing off-court challenges, including a December 2023 arrest related to serious allegations, Shannon was ultimately found not guilty of the charges in June 2024. Reflecting on the jersey retirement, he expressed his gratitude, stating, “I was just happy. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to get my jersey up there.”
Now, the Fighting Illini just need to ensure that his jersey is displayed right-side-up in the rafters.
