Co-hosted by Italy and Japan, this year’s summit emphasizes enhancing multilateral initiatives in maritime safety, marine environmental protection, and law enforcement at sea. The discussions will address critical issues such as emergency responses to natural disasters, major pollution incidents, and transnational maritime crimes, while also underscoring the importance of technological advancements and capacity building among Coast Guards globally.

Inaugural remarks were made by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba (virtually), both stressing the urgent need for coordinated global efforts in areas like Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), Marine Pollution Response (MPR), and the enforcement of maritime law.

India’s contribution to the summit includes an expert lecture titled “Guardians Against the Blaze: ICG’s Tactical Response to Fire Emergencies,” which highlights the operational capabilities of the ICG and its leadership in maritime safety and incident response.

The CGGS was first established in 2017 by the Japan Coast Guard and the Nippon Foundation in response to the growing complexity of maritime challenges. Since its inception, it has become a vital venue for fostering trust and cooperative action among maritime forces.

Looking to the future, India has expressed its intention to bid for the Presidency of the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit in 2027, aiming to host the event.
