Bengaluru experienced light, sporadic rain on Monday, while other regions of Karnataka, including Mysuru, Kodagu, and coastal areas, were hit by heavier downpours. In response to the adverse weather conditions, schools and colleges in Mysuru and Kodagu were declared closed for the day.

The Dakshina Kannada district has been particularly affected, with heavy rainfall leading to a surge in local waterfalls. At Erugundi Falls near Paladka in Moodbidri, five tourists found themselves trapped on rocks due to a sudden increase in water levels. Fortunately, locals were able to rescue them using ropes. Despite repeated warnings, many visitors continue to approach the dangerous edges of the falls.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. This alert will remain in effect for the next five days. In light of the deteriorating weather, one National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been deployed in Puttur, while two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are stationed in Mangaluru and Subrahmanya. Authorities have been advised to maintain a high level of vigilance.

For North Interior Karnataka, an orange alert is in place for the next two days, with the IMD predicting very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Meanwhile, South Interior Karnataka is also under a red alert for the same duration, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall.

In northern Karnataka, the Krishna River has resumed flowing following significant rainfall in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats and Karnataka’s Belagavi district, bringing hope to farmers as dry riverbeds fill with water. The Almatti reservoir in Vijayapura has seen a water level increase of approximately three feet, currently holding 27.284 TMC of water, with inflows surpassing outflows. The reservoir’s total capacity is 123.081 TMC.

As the weather continues to evolve, residents and authorities alike are urged to stay informed and prepared for the ongoing rainfall and its potential impacts.
