In a recent statement, DMK leader and Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi sharply criticized actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay for his recent comments regarding custodial deaths in Tamil Nadu. Without directly naming him, Kanimozhi accused certain actors of exhibiting double standards, particularly those who have portrayed police brutality and glorified custodial deaths in their films, yet now express selective outrage upon entering politics.

“Movies serve as a medium to inform the public. Some actors have glorified lockup deaths in their films, but now, after stepping into politics, their sudden concern for the people is quite amusing,” Kanimozhi remarked. Her comments followed Vijay’s strong criticism of the DMK government during a protest demanding justice for Ajith Kumar, a 27-year-old temple guard who allegedly died due to police torture while in custody.

At the protest in Chennai, which marked his first major public appearance since launching the TVK, Vijay lambasted the state’s handling of rising custodial deaths, labeling the administration led by Chief Minister MK Stalin as a “Sorry ma model” government. “The maximum response we receive from this government is ‘sorry ma’,” he stated. “From the Anna University case to the Ajith Kumar case, how many more atrocities will your governance permit? The courts are the ones intervening and questioning your government. If that’s the case, what is the need for you? What is the need for your governance? What is the need for a Chief Minister?”

Dressed in black and holding a placard that read ‘Don’t need sorry, we need justice’, Vijay criticized the DMK regime, highlighting that 24 individuals have died in police custody during their rule. He questioned whether the government had apologized to the families of these victims or provided compensation, as it did for Ajith Kumar’s family.

Ajith Kumar, who worked as a security guard at the Madapuram Kaliamman temple in Sivaganga, was taken into police custody on June 27 for questioning related to a jewelry theft. He was later declared “brought dead” at a government hospital, with police initially attributing his death to an epileptic seizure. However, a post-mortem report revealed 44 injuries and signs of severe internal bleeding, supporting allegations of custodial torture made by his family.

A judicial inquiry ordered by the Madras High Court confirmed that Ajith Kumar’s death was indeed a case of custodial death. Following the inquiry, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to appoint an investigating officer within a week to continue the investigation, with a final report expected by August 20.
