**Karnataka Sees Alarming Rise in Farmer Suicides Amid Political Blame Game**

Karnataka has witnessed a troubling surge in farmer suicides, with official government data indicating 981 cases reported between 2024 and mid-2025. Out of these, 825 have been confirmed as eligible farmer suicides, while 138 were attributed to other causes. The state government has provided compensation to 807 families affected by these tragedies, although compensation remains pending in 18 cases.

Haveri district has recorded the highest number of farmer suicides, totaling 128, followed by Mysuru with 73, Dharwad with 72, and Belagavi with 71. Notably, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Udupi, and Kolar reported no farmer suicides during this period.

The rising distress among farmers has sparked a political debate, with BJP state president BY Vijayendra attributing the crisis to the negligence of the Congress government. He criticized the current administration for failing to improve the farming sector since taking power, claiming that beneficial schemes for farmers have been halted. Vijayendra highlighted the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, asserting that the previous BJP government had supplemented central assistance by an additional Rs 4,000, benefiting over 52 lakh farmers. He also pointed out the discontinuation of the Raitha Vidyanidhi scheme, which supported farmers’ children in pursuing higher education, as another failure of the current government.

In response, Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad refuted the BJP’s claims, emphasizing the gravity of the situation with 981 reported farmer suicides. He accused the BJP of misleading the public and stated that the state government has already communicated with the central government regarding the issue, including a shortage of pesticides. Arshad also criticized the central government’s role, noting that despite Prime Minister Modi’s promises to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP), no significant progress has been made. He pointed out the high diesel prices and additional taxes, asserting that the state government is providing subsidies to support farmers and urging the central government to cease imposing extra taxes.

As the situation unfolds, the plight of farmers in Karnataka remains a pressing concern, highlighting the need for effective policies and support systems to address their challenges.
