On Sunday night, two Indian students from Kashmir sustained injuries in an attack near the boys’ dormitory for international students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association reported the incident on social media platform X, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns for Indian nationals in the region. Fortunately, the students are currently in stable condition and have been relocated to Ramsar by university authorities as a precautionary measure.

The association emphasized its commitment to staying in constant communication with Indian students residing in the university’s Hujjatdost Dormitory. They urged the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran to facilitate the safe relocation of all Indian students, particularly those from Kashmir, in light of the escalating tensions in the area.

Srinagar MP Aga Syed Rugullah Mehdi expressed his concern over the incident, stating that an Israeli strike had impacted the Hujjatdost Ali hostel, which houses many Kashmiri students. He noted that some students suffered minor injuries and has reached out to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, advocating for the immediate relocation of the students within Iran or their evacuation once airspace reopens.

Sajad Lone, MLA from Handwara, also called on the government to take action, emphasizing the need to ensure the safe return of Indian citizens. He posted on X, “A humble appeal to the government. We need to do what it takes to get our citizens back. These students are stuck there, and efforts must be made to bring them back safely.”

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed that he had spoken with Dr. Jaishankar regarding the safety of students from the Union Territory stranded in Iran. Abdullah shared that the Minister assured him that the Ministry of External Affairs is in close contact with Iranian officials and will take all necessary steps to protect Indian students in the country.

In response to New Delhi’s request for safe passage for approximately 10,000 Indian students stranded in Iran, Iranian authorities indicated that, due to the current closure of airspace, Indian nationals could exit via land borders into Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan. The Indian government is reportedly considering an evacuation operation to ensure the safe return of its citizens from Iran.
