LeBron James faced criticism on Sunday night after announcing just 90 minutes before the NBA All-Star Game that he would not participate due to a foot issue. The Los Angeles Lakers star cited discomfort in his foot and ankle, marking the end of his streak of 20 consecutive All-Star Game appearances. TNT hosts expressed their dismay at James’ late decision.
“I think ‘Bron could have helped somebody else out and said this earlier,” remarked Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green. Former NBA player Jalen Rose added that James “took a roster spot from somebody.” This was the first time James missed an All-Star Game since 2004, where he was set to play for Team Shaquille O’Neal in the new competition format. Following his announcement, the team was left with only seven players: Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and James Harden.
“I was hoping that it would feel a lot better this morning, but it’s not where I want it to be,” James stated. “With 30 games left and our playoff push in the competitive Western Conference, it’s crucial for me to take care of myself and be mindful of what’s ahead.” He described his decision as a form of maintenance, emphasizing the need to manage the injury he has been dealing with for years.
James plans to continue rehabbing the injury on Monday and hopes to return to play on Wednesday when the Lakers face the Charlotte Hornets. This season, he is averaging 24.3 points, 9 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game.
