**LTIMindtree Secures Major Project to Modernize PAN Management**

The income tax department has chosen LTIMindtree Ltd, a mid-sized IT firm, to enhance its technology infrastructure for managing Permanent Account Numbers (PANs), as revealed by the government’s public procurement portal. The company submitted a bid of ₹811.5 crore, excluding taxes, with an adjusted bid value of ₹792.55 crore, also exclusive of taxes.

According to the portal’s notification, four bids were received in response to the request for proposal (RFP), and LTIMindtree was declared the successful bidder following a thorough evaluation process. The PAN, a ten-digit alphanumeric identifier, is essential for various financial activities, including filing tax returns, opening bank accounts, and making significant cash transactions.

This initiative aims to streamline and modernize the issuance and management of PAN and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Numbers (TAN), which are necessary for tax deduction and collection at the source. The income tax department currently manages a database containing over 780 million PANs and 7.3 million TANs.

The PAN 2.0 project, which is expected to launch within 18 months, will leverage advanced technologies to improve public service quality and grievance redressal mechanisms. The cabinet committee on economic affairs approved the project in November 2024.

The PAN system links all transactions of a taxpayer with the income tax department, facilitating easy access to information regarding tax payments, credits, and returns. This comprehensive project will address all aspects related to PAN and TAN, including allotments, updates, Aadhaar-PAN linking, and online validation.

A spokesperson for LTIMindtree confirmed the award of the PAN 2.0 project, emphasizing its goal to enhance the PAN issuance process and security through innovative technology. The government anticipates that this project will optimize costs, enhance security, and improve operational efficiency, ultimately enriching the digital experience for taxpayers by upgrading the existing PAN-TAN ecosystem. Additionally, there are plans to utilize PAN as a common identifier across various government agencies.
