Max Scherzer has expressed his doubts about the automatic balls-strikes system, questioning whether it’s possible for players to be evaluated by humans instead.

**Automated Ball-Strike System Debuts in Major League Baseball, Veteran Pitcher Expresses Concerns**

The Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system is set to make its debut in Major League Baseball this spring, following successful trials in the minor leagues since 2021. Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, 40, is not thrilled about the implementation, especially as he may be nearing the end of his career by the time the system is fully adopted, despite Commissioner Rob Manfred’s plans for its rollout next year.

During his spring training debut, Scherzer experienced the system firsthand when a batter challenged one of his pitches—and the batter won. This incident visibly frustrated Scherzer, who noted that the process took longer than the average 17 seconds observed in the minors. Later, a new player for the Toronto Blue Jays appeared to sarcastically challenge a pitch of his own, which he also lost.

Scherzer expressed skepticism about the necessity of the ABS system, stating, “I get what we’re trying to do here, but I think major league umpires are really good. So what are we actually changing here? We know there are going to be strikes that are changed to balls, and balls that are changed to strikes. So are we actually improving the game? Are the umpires really that bad? I don’t think so.”

He further questioned, “Can we just play baseball? We’re humans. Can we just be judged by humans? Do we really need to disrupt the game? I think humans are defined by humans.”

This spring, each team will have two challenges per game, with the ability to retain challenges that are successful. Only the batter, pitcher, or catcher can initiate a challenge, and it must be done immediately after the call without assistance from the bench or other players.

The ABS system is part of a series of significant changes introduced by Commissioner Manfred, which also include a pitch timer, larger bases, and restrictions on defensive shifts. Despite the adjustments, fan attendance has increased over the past two years, indicating a positive reception to the changes in the sport.
