Mayor Bowser of Washington D.C. is considering the use of public funds to assist in financing a multibillion-dollar stadium for the Commanders at the RFK location.

Washington’s NFL team has spent the past 28 seasons hosting home games in Maryland. The Commanders play at Northwest Stadium, previously known as FedEx Field, which opened for the 1997 season and is situated approximately 13 miles from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. This stadium replaced RFK Stadium. However, the open-air venue, where the Commanders have hosted opponents for nearly three decades, has significantly deteriorated, leading to discussions about potential alternatives.

Recently, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser met with local residents near the rundown RFK Stadium site to explore the possibility of constructing a modern stadium for the Washington Commanders. Bowser has consistently advocated for the team’s return to the District of Columbia. “I firmly believe that in global cities — world-class cities like ours — we do big things,” Bowser stated. “We have arts and culture, entertainment, nightlife, and sports. We have great neighborhoods, and we can invite the world to our city. But the fact is, until we have a modern stadium, we will not be able to host events that the world is accustomed to.”

Proposals suggest that a new stadium could occupy 25 acres of the 174-acre site, with the remaining land potentially used for mixed-use development, including housing, restaurants, and parks. The city recently gained control of this land after extensive negotiations with federal lawmakers. In December, the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan resolution to transfer the land from the federal government to D.C., allowing the federal government to lease the land to the city for 99 years.

“This is a win for D.C., for our region, and for America,” Bowser expressed on social media following the approval. “Everybody loves a good comeback story – and that’s D.C.’s story. #OurRFK” The bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden in January, marking a significant step toward the Commanders’ potential return to the nation’s capital, although several challenges remain.

On Thursday, Bowser emphasized the necessity of building a world-class stadium if the city aims to host concerts, Super Bowls, and other major sporting events. “Until we have a modern stadium, we will not be able to host events like the world is used to, including a World Cup, a Super Bowl — and yes, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift,” Bowser remarked. The mayor expressed her commitment to collaborating with the Commanders to persuade the franchise that constructing a stadium within the city limits is the best option, while also ensuring that the deal benefits the local community. Commanders principal owner Josh Harris has not publicly stated his preferred stadium location but acknowledged that the team could potentially play in D.C. or Maryland.
