**Gators on the Golf Course: Bill Horschel’s Encounter at the Cognizant Classic**
When golfing in Florida, it’s essential to be aware of alligators on the course—unless you’re Bill Horschel. As a Florida Gators alumnus, Horschel is well-acquainted with the sight of real-life gators wandering onto the greens. This was the case at PGA National during the first round of the Cognizant Classic, where Horschel was seen using his 60-degree wedge to gently shoo away a gator that approached him. He concluded the round tied for 16th place with an impressive 5-under score.
Horschel appeared unfazed as he nudged the gator, which then retreated to the water. After his round, he reflected on the viral moment, stating, “I’m not afraid of gators. Most of the time, they’re more afraid of you. They typically only become aggressive during mating season or if you get too close to their nest. Generally, they’re harmless.”
Despite his calm demeanor, Horschel exercised caution and avoided any aggressive actions toward the gator. The encounter occurred as he finished his sixth hole and spotted the gator while heading to the next tee. “He was going nowhere good, so I just went over there and helped the cop,” Horschel explained.
Horschel’s round included four birdies, one eagle, and a single bogey on the par-4 second hole, which he quickly recovered from by eagling the par-5 third. He added birdies on holes eight, nine, and ten, and finished strong with a birdie on the par-5 18th after a series of pars on the back nine. While his performance was commendable, he trails behind Jake Knapp, who shot an extraordinary 59 to lead after Round 1 at 12-under. Close behind Knapp are Daniel Berger, Russell Henley, and Sami Valimaki, all at 8-under.
