Rick Buckler, the drummer of The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69, as confirmed by his former bandmate Paul Weller. Buckler was a key member of the mod punk band, which also included bassist Bruce Foxton, 69, and lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Weller, 66. He was with the group from its inception in 1972 until their breakup a decade later. Although they never fully reunited, Buckler and Foxton performed together on several occasions.
Buckler died peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a brief illness, surrounded by family, according to a statement from his management. “Rick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a devoted friend to many who will be greatly missed,” the statement read.
The Jam released six studio albums during their career, with Buckler contributing to all of them, including the critically acclaimed “All Mod Cons” (1978) and “Sound Affects” (1980). The band achieved 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles, including four number ones, and had a UK number one album with “The Gift.” They are best known for hits like “Town Called Malice,” “Going Underground,” and “Down In The Tube Station At Midnight.” The band disbanded in 1982 but Foxton and Buckler later performed together as From The Jam.
In a heartfelt post on Facebook and Instagram, Weller expressed his shock and sadness at Buckler’s passing, reminiscing about their early days rehearsing and performing together. He reflected on their journey and the lasting impact of their music, extending his deepest sympathies to Buckler’s family and friends.
Foxton also shared a tribute, expressing his devastation at the news and highlighting Buckler’s talent as a drummer whose innovative patterns shaped their songs. He conveyed his gratitude for the time they spent working together and offered his thoughts to Buckler’s family during this difficult time.
Buckler was born in Woking, Surrey.
