Selena Gomez has removed a video in which she expressed her emotional response to Donald Trump’s immigration policies after facing criticism. The 32-year-old singer and actress, who has Mexican roots, appeared visibly upset as she addressed the impact of Trump’s immigration crackdown. In the now-deleted Instagram video posted on Monday, Gomez tearfully stated, “I just want to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
This reaction followed Trump’s signing of 10 executive orders aimed at enforcing mass deportations and tightening border security. The administration has initiated significant immigration raids, with operations planned in multiple U.S. cities each week. Raids began in Chicago and New York City, with Aurora, Colorado, set to be the next target.
During a recent meeting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) leadership, field offices were instructed to increase their “routine operations” to meet a daily arrest quota of 1,200 to 1,500 individuals. After receiving backlash for her emotional video, Gomez replaced it with an Instagram story stating, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” which has also since been deleted.
One of her critics, Republican Senate candidate Sam Parker, suggested she should “be deported” on social media. Gomez appeared to respond humorously on her Instagram story, saying, “Oh Mr Parker, Mr Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”
Recently, Gomez starred in the Oscar-nominated Spanish-language musical “Emilia Perez,” portraying one of four Mexican women involved with a cartel. The Trump administration has promised the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, with images released showing individuals in shackles being transported on military planes, captioned, “Deportation flights have begun.” The administration’s expanded arrest priorities now include all undocumented individuals, not just those with criminal records, raising fears within immigrant communities. According to Pew Research Center’s 2022 data, there are approximately 4 million unauthorized Mexican migrants in the U.S.
