Sister of Unnao rape survivor fears Kuldeep Sengar’s bail could kill her or her family

**Bail Granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar: Victim’s Family Expresses Fear**

The Delhi High Court has granted bail to former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar, suspending his sentence in the high-profile 2017 Unnao rape case. This decision has left the victim’s family feeling anxious and unsafe. Following the court’s ruling, the victim’s sister voiced her concerns, recalling past attacks on their family and expressing fear of potential retaliation now that Sengar is free.

“I’m not happy about this. He killed my uncle and then my father. Then this incident happened with my sister. He has been released, but we’re still in danger,” she stated. The sister articulated her fears for her family’s safety, saying, “Who knows, now that they’re out, they might kill me and my entire family. If they have released him, they should put us in jail. At least our lives would be safe there.”

The victim’s sister highlighted the distress caused by the bail decision, noting that the family continues to face threats. “My sister is in distress that he has been granted bail. My family is still in danger. There are small children. I have a brother. Who knows what they might do to him?” she added, alleging that individuals associated with Sengar have been issuing threats.

A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidynathan Shankar suspended Sengar’s sentence while his appeal against conviction is pending. The court has mandated that Sengar remain in Delhi during the bail period and prohibited him from entering within a five-kilometer radius of the victim. He is also required to report to the police every Monday, with any violation of these conditions potentially leading to the cancellation of his bail.

Sengar has appealed the trial court’s verdict, which convicted him of raping a 17-year-old girl and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25 lakh. The prosecution alleges that the survivor was kidnapped and raped by Sengar between June 11 and June 20, 2017, and subsequently sold for Rs 60,000. The survivor was later recovered from the Maakhi police station area, and it is claimed that she was threatened to remain silent after the incident. The High Court has yet to hear Sengar’s appeal on its merits.
