**Headline:** CGST Department Uncovers Major Smuggling Operation of Banned Areca Nuts in Maharashtra

In a significant crackdown, the Central Goods & Services Tax (CGST) Department has dismantled a smuggling operation involving the illegal importation of banned areca nuts, known for their cancer-causing properties, in Raigad district, Maharashtra. On Saturday, officials seized 11 trucks transporting 300 kg of these nuts, valued at an astonishing Rs 300 crore, which had arrived via the RORO (roll on roll off) railway service from Mangaluru to Kolad.

The shipment was reportedly destined for Nagpur, where it was set to be distributed through various channels involved in the production of tobacco products such as gutkha and pan masala. Investigations revealed that the GST certification for this shipment was fraudulently registered under the name of a local individual associated with a proprietorship firm, ND Traders, based in Mangaluru. Further inquiries indicated that the proprietor, who earns a meager Rs 10,000 per month, may have been exploited in this operation.

The investigation has led authorities to identify Sameer Khan and Kader Khan as the alleged masterminds behind this smuggling network. These individuals are accused of trafficking the areca nuts from Indonesia to Tuticorin in Kerala, subsequently sending them to Mangaluru for processing. The polished nuts were then loaded onto trucks and transported via RORO services to Raigad, with plans for road distribution to Nagpur.

This incident highlights a troubling trend of smuggling low-quality areca nuts into India, where they are treated with carcinogenic chemicals in Mangaluru warehouses before being distributed nationwide, contributing to a growing cancer epidemic. Over recent years, various agencies, including the CBI, ED, and CGST, have intensified efforts to combat such smuggling operations, resulting in a notable decrease in these activities.

In response to this case, the Maharashtra Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated its own investigation under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS), 2006. The FDA has requested updates from the CGST regarding any developments in the case and has mandated that no substandard areca nuts be allowed in the market.

As authorities continue to pursue this case, the implications for public health and safety remain significant, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance against such illegal activities.

**FAQ Section:**

**Q: What are the health risks associated with areca nuts?**
A: Areca nuts are linked to serious health risks, including cancer, particularly when processed with harmful chemicals. Their illegal distribution poses a significant public health threat.
