The American coach of Team Canada soccer has criticized President Trump for his comments regarding Canada being the ’51st state,’ deeming the remarks as ‘insulting.’

Canadian men’s soccer coach Jesse Marsch criticized former President Donald Trump for his “51st state” comments, labeling them as “insulting.” Marsch, a Wisconsin native and former Team USA player, took on the role of Team Canada’s men’s soccer coach in 2024. During a media event for the CONCACAF Nations League, he expressed his disapproval of Trump’s remarks, stating he felt “ashamed” of how Canada was characterized by the president.

“As an American, I want to address the ‘51st state’ narrative, which I find unsettling and frankly insulting,” Marsch told reporters. “Canada is a strong, independent nation with deep roots in decency. It values high ethics and respect, in stark contrast to the polarized and often hate-fueled climate in the U.S.”

Marsch emphasized Canada’s commitment to fairness and unity, noting that as the national team coach, he has witnessed how Canadians embrace their diverse backgrounds as a source of strength. “Our team is made up mostly of first- and second-generation Canadians from various heritages and cultures. They take immense pride in being Canadian, in representing their country, and in the camaraderie they share.”

Tensions have been rising between the U.S. and Canada following Trump’s comments, which also included referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor.” Recently, Trump announced tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China, which are set to take effect soon. This decision was made in response to drug trafficking issues at the U.S.-Canadian border.

In a recent conversation, Trump and Trudeau discussed various topics, including the 4 Nations Face-Off hockey tournament, which heightened tensions after Canadian fans booed the U.S. national anthem. Team Canada won the tournament, and prior to the championship game, the Canadian anthem singer altered the lyrics in protest against Trump.

Marsch concluded his remarks with a direct message to Trump: “If I have one message for our president, it’s to stop the ridiculous rhetoric about Canada being the 51st state. As an American, I’m embarrassed by the arrogance and disregard we’ve shown towards one of our oldest and most loyal allies. However, I believe this will only strengthen our team’s resolve and determination to represent our country.
